Stone, Light, and Story: Inside Fable Retreats from Puglia to the Hudson Valley
Founder Garrett Wagner shares how Fable Retreats creates unique stays inspired by thoughtful design, local culture, and unforgettable hospitality.

Some homes invite you inside. Others invite you into a different way of seeing the world.
In the countryside of Puglia, Italy, ancient stone trulli rise from olive groves that have stood for generations. Thick limestone walls keep interiors cool beneath the Mediterranean sun while evenings unfold beneath star-filled skies. Time moves differently here. It's quieter, slower, and deeply connected to place.
It's exactly the kind of setting that inspired Garrett Wagner to create Fable Retreats.
After spending years crafting stories for some of entertainment's biggest brands—including Netflix, FX, and Showtime—Garrett now tells stories through architecture, interiors, and hospitality. Rather than producing campaigns designed to transport audiences for a few minutes, he's creating homes that become the setting for some of life's most meaningful moments.
"The houses are just the canvas. My hope is that people leave feeling joy."
For him, every stay is another chapter in someone's story.
From Entertainment Marketing to Boutique Hospitality
Long before he became a hospitality founder, Garrett built a career in creative marketing, producing campaigns, trailers, and visual identities that sparked emotion and curiosity. Storytelling wasn't simply part of his job—it became the lens through which he viewed experiences.
When the pandemic reshaped daily life, Garrett found himself leaving Manhattan for New York's Hudson Valley. Like many people, he began rethinking what home meant. As the entertainment industry experienced restructuring and layoffs, another passion quietly took center stage.
"I've always loved houses. I just kept doing these stressful renovations—and somehow, I always came back for more."
What began as an interest in restoration evolved into Fable Retreats, a collection of thoughtfully designed homes that reflect both the character of their locations and the people who stay in them.
What Is Fable Retreats?
The name Fable Retreats captures Garrett's philosophy perfectly.
Rather than creating identical vacation rentals, he has built a small collection of homes that each tell their own story. They share a common design language—warm, welcoming, intentional—but each responds to its landscape, architecture, and history.
They're upscale without feeling precious. Beautiful without sacrificing comfort. Designed for gathering rather than simply sleeping.
"You're not just dropping your bag. You're stepping into another little chapter of your life."
Whether guests are celebrating a milestone, reconnecting with family, or simply escaping everyday routines, the homes are meant to become part of those memories.
Hudson Valley Vacation Rental with River Views
One of Fable Retreats' earliest homes sits on the edge of New York's Hudson Valley, where sweeping river views become the centerpiece of the experience.
An elevated porch stretches toward the landscape, inviting guests to settle in with coffee at sunrise or wine as the afternoon fades into evening. Boats drift across the river, fog rolls through the valley, autumn transforms the hillsides into vibrant color, and winter light casts an entirely different mood across the water.
Inside, the design intentionally stays quiet.
The interiors support the landscape rather than compete with it, allowing nature to become the focal point.
"You don't have to entertain anyone. You just put them on the porch, give them a glass of wine, and that's it."
It's a home built around perspective—in every sense of the word.

Wilton Manors Vacation Home Designed for Groups
Thousands of miles away, another chapter unfolds beneath palm trees in Wilton Manors, Florida.
Here, life revolves around the pool.
Lush tropical landscaping surrounds generous outdoor spaces designed for long afternoons, shared meals, and celebrations that naturally spill from indoors to out. The property feels less like a vacation rental and more like a private resort designed for friends and families to reconnect.
Garrett deliberately resisted creating another interchangeable Florida rental.
Too many homes, he says, feel anonymous—rows of white walls, beige furnishings, and interiors that could exist almost anywhere.
Instead, he focused on warmth, personality, and spaces that invite people together.
"I'm more interested in larger spaces where people can gather—friends, families, bachelorettes—places that feel like they're meant for something to happen."

Restoring a Historic Trullo in Ostuni, Puglia
If one property best represents Garrett's philosophy, it's his restoration in the countryside outside Ostuni.
The home began as a traditional Italian family summer house, anchored by centuries-old trulli with distinctive conical roofs and stone walls nearly a meter thick. Rather than erase its history through renovation, Garrett approached the project with restraint.
"It was more like a restoration than a renovation."
Modern comforts required thoughtful intervention. Electrical systems had to be carefully carved into ancient stone walls. Moisture beneath the floors demanded extensive insulation. Every decision relied on the expertise of local craftsmen who understood traditional trulli construction in ways few others could.
The goal was never perfection.
It was preservation.
The result feels remarkably timeless. Carefully selected furnishings sit comfortably alongside weathered stone. Rooms remain intentionally uncluttered, allowing architecture, texture, and natural light to take center stage.

What It's Like to Stay in a Traditional Trullo
Mornings begin with cool air inside the stone walls before doors open to olive trees and countryside views. Evenings unfold outdoors beneath the stars, where conversation replaces schedules and the pace of everyday life quietly disappears.
The interiors embrace refined simplicity. Carefully chosen furniture, thoughtful artwork, and collected objects give the home warmth without overwhelming its historic architecture.
Rather than feeling staged, the house feels enduring—as though it has evolved naturally over time while remaining deeply connected to its surroundings.
"Travel opens your eyes to how many ways there are to live a life—even if it's just for a week."
The Design Philosophy Behind Every Fable Retreat
Across every Fable Retreats property, Garrett returns to the same principles.
His homes are carefully considered without becoming intimidating. Guests are encouraged to relax rather than worry about disturbing perfectly staged interiors.
Art plays an essential role in creating that feeling.
Rather than filling rooms with matching décor or purchasing everything from a single showroom, Garrett mixes contemporary pieces with vintage finds and objects discovered along the way. The result is a layered sense of history that makes each home feel genuinely lived in.
"You can't just buy everything from one catalog and call it a home. It doesn't feel real."
That authenticity extends beyond aesthetics. Every property reflects its surroundings while maintaining the warmth and personality that define Fable Retreats.
Designing for Joy
Ask Garrett what he hopes guests remember, and the answer isn't a particular piece of furniture or architectural detail.
It's joy.
The joy of gathering around a table with friends.
The joy of discovering somewhere completely unfamiliar.
The joy of slowing down long enough to notice changing light across a river or the silence of an olive grove at dusk.
His homes aren't designed to impress from a distance. They're designed to become the backdrop for reunions, celebrations, quiet mornings, and meaningful conversations—the kinds of experiences people carry home long after checkout.
"Ultimately, I want people to feel joy—a moment in life that's a little more special than the everyday."
Why Direct Booking Matters
Like many independent hospitality owners, Garrett understands both the reach and the limitations of major booking platforms.
Algorithms change. Policies shift. A single unavoidable cancellation can affect years of hard-earned status.
Direct booking creates something different.
It allows hosts to build genuine relationships with guests while giving travelers access to current information, local recommendations, and the confidence of knowing exactly who's welcoming them.
For design-conscious travelers, booking direct also means avoiding unnecessary service fees while supporting independent hospitality businesses.

A Growing Collection of Stories
Today, Fable Retreats spans three remarkable destinations—from the changing seasons of New York's Hudson Valley to tropical South Florida and the timeless landscapes of southern Italy.
Each property reflects its own place, history, and personality.
Together, they represent something larger: the belief that thoughtful design can shape not only how a home looks, but how people feel within it.
From the Hudson River's changing light to the ancient stone rhythms of Puglia, Fable Retreats is less a portfolio of vacation homes than a growing collection of stories—each one waiting for its next chapter.
