Best Catskills Cabins for Fall Foliage 2026

There's a two-week window every October when the Catskills stop being pretty and start being unreasonable about it. Ridgelines that were solid green in September go orange, then rust, then bare — and if you time a trip wrong by even a week, you'll miss most of it. Here's how to get the timing right, and where to stay once you've picked your dates.
When Fall Colors Actually Peak in the Catskills
The Catskills don't turn all at once — elevation changes everything.
- Early-to-mid October: Higher elevations around Hunter and Windham start first, since color change tracks with the first cold nights at altitude.
- Mid-October: This is generally the sweet spot for the broader region — Woodstock, Phoenicia, Margaretville — when the mid-elevation forests of oak, maple, and birch hit peak color together.
- Late October: Lower valleys and the Delaware County river towns hold their color a little longer, making them a good backup plan if you're booking last-minute or the higher elevations have already dropped their leaves.
Because the window moves fast, the cabins in the most scenic viewing spots get booked up by late summer for the exact weekends people want. If you're reading this in July, you're actually right on time — not early.
Where to Base Yourself, by Vibe
Windham & Hunter — for ridge views and easy day trips. This is ski-town country in winter and foliage-viewing country in fall, with plenty of overlooks and short hikes that put you above the treeline for wide color views. Good base if you want a short drive to a lot of scenery without much hiking effort.
Tannersville Forest Retreat sits right in this pocket — Tannersville is minutes from Hunter Mountain, and the property's mountain views put you close to the ridge overlooks without much of a drive. Sleeps up to 5 across 2 bedrooms.
Woodstock & Phoenicia — for a slower, more design-led stay. If your idea of a fall trip is a wood stove, a good book, and color out every window rather than a packed itinerary, this pocket of the Catskills leans that way. It's also where a lot of the region's more architecturally interesting cabins live.
Muddy Brook Treehouse: Hidden Among the Ferns, tucked into the woods outside Phoenicia, is a good example of the type — set back among ferns and trees rather than staged for photos, the kind of place where the fall view outside does most of the work. Sleeps up to 4 across 2 bedrooms.
Delaware County — for river valleys and a later peak. If the calendar didn't cooperate and you're booking in late October, this is where to look. The valley towns along the Delaware River tend to hold color a week or two past the higher elevations.
Roxbury, in particular, has some of the widest choice on Locèlle right now. The Mountain House and The Valley Cottage each sleep up to 6 across 3 bedrooms, and Yamagoya Cabin offers a quieter, more minimalist take on the same valley — a Zen-inspired retreat that sleeps up to 5.
Things to Actually Do Once You're There
- Short hikes with a payoff view — you don't need a summit push to get a good foliage photo in the Catskills; plenty of overlooks are a 20-30 minute walk from a trailhead.
- Apple orchards and farm stands — most of the region's small farms are in full swing in October, and it's an easy half-day stop between hikes.
- A slow drive on Route 23A — one of the more scenic stretches in the region, especially through Kaarskill Clove.
Book the Cabin Directly, Skip the Platform Fee
Fall foliage weekends are exactly when platform booking fees sting the most — peak-season rates already run high, and a 15%+ service fee on top of that adds up fast for a 2-3 night stay. Every property on Locèlle is bookable direct with the owner, so the price you see is closer to the price you pay.
The Short Version
If you want peak color and the widest pick of cabins, aim for the second and third weeks of October and book by August. If you're planning last-minute, look toward Delaware County's lower valleys, where the color holds a little longer. Either way, the Catskills in October is one of those trips that's genuinely hard to overhype — just don't wait until September to lock in a place to stay.
