Joshua Tree in Winter: Where to Stay in Pioneertown and the Hi-Desert

Winter is the season the high desert is easiest to love. The days are mild enough to hike at midday, the nights are cold and very clear, and the trails are quieter than in spring.

This guide covers what winter in Joshua Tree is really like and where to stay, from Pioneertown and Morongo Valley up into the mountains and down to the Coachella Valley. Every home is booked directly with its owner, with no platform fees added at checkout.

What winter in the high desert feels like

From December to February, daytime highs in Joshua Tree typically run between the mid-50s and mid-60s Fahrenheit, according to More Than Just Parks. Nights are cold and often drop below freezing. A light dusting of snow on the boulders and Joshua trees happens a few times most winters, and it rarely lasts the day.

  • Pack layers. You may hike in a T-shirt at noon and want a down jacket by the fire at seven.
  • Start later, finish earlier. Mornings are cold and the sun sets before 5 p.m. in December. Midday is the best time on the trail.
  • Check the forecast for your area. The park spans more than 5,000 feet of elevation, so conditions vary. The National Park Service weather page links to forecasts for each part of the park.

Pioneertown: a modern house on ten acres

Sol to Soul sits at the end of a private dirt road in Pipes Canyon, on ten acres of Mojave Desert beside a huge boulder known as Whale Rock. Built as a low-impact prefab with Cover, the house uses floor-to-ceiling glass and passive solar design, and it has been featured in Dwell and Condé Nast Traveler.

Inside are Christian Liaigre furniture, Moroccan rugs and art by Robert Motherwell and Aaron Fink. There are two king bedrooms and two bathrooms, and it sleeps four. The kitchen has Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances. Outside, a saltwater hot tub and an outdoor shower sit under the boulder, which is where a winter night in the desert should end. From $620 a night.

Pioneertown's Mane Street, built as a Western film set, is a few minutes away. Pappy & Harriet's serves barbecue and live music most nights, and the Pioneertown Mountains Preserve is close for a quieter walk. The national park is about 40 minutes by car.

Morongo Valley: birdsong and a midcentury villa

Mockingbird Villa is a midcentury hideaway on a hillside between Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. Vaulted ceilings and custom folding glass doors open the living room onto the patio, and two private acres of cactus and succulent garden lead out to mountain views. There is a hot tub for starlit evenings. It has one bedroom and sleeps four. From $250 a night.

The villa is close to Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, where boardwalk trails cross a desert oasis of cottonwoods and willows. The owners say more than 200 species of migrating birds pass through. Bring binoculars. Read the story behind Mockingbird Villa.

Above the desert: snow on the peaks

An A-Frame Above the World sits above the Pines to Palms Highway in Mountain Center, within the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. In winter you can look at snow-dusted peaks in one direction and the warm floor of the Palm Desert in the other. Nearby trails are good for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when there is snow, and Idyllwild is twenty minutes up the mountain.

The house has 30-foot ceilings, four bedrooms and a solid oak table that seats eight. It sleeps eight. Palm Springs and its Aerial Tramway are about 30 minutes away, and Joshua Tree is under an hour. From $600 a night. Read Adele and Carlo's story.

Down in the Coachella Valley: a pool and warmer days

The low desert is warmer than Joshua Tree in winter, which makes it a good base for a group that wants sun by day and a day trip to the park.

Solicio del Sol in Indio has four bedrooms and three bathrooms and sleeps ten. A private backyard with a pool and mountain views is the center of the house. Old Town La Quinta, Palm Springs and Shields Date Garden are all close. Ask the owners whether the pool is heated in winter. From $350 a night.

Stargazing in winter

Joshua Tree is a certified dark sky park, and winter brings the longest nights of the year. On a clear night away from town, the Milky Way and thousands of stars are visible with the naked eye.

Plan around the moon. The darkest skies come in the week around each new moon. Let your eyes adjust for 20 minutes, use a red light, and dress for temperatures near freezing. You do not need to leave the house at Sol to Soul or Mockingbird Villa. The hot tub is a fine observatory.

The winter long weekends

  • Christmas to New Year's. Both holidays fall on a Friday this season.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, January 16 to 18, 2027.
  • Presidents' weekend, February 13 to 15, 2027.

These fill first. Ordinary weekdays in January and February are the quietest time of the whole year in the park.

About Locèlle, and why these homes are booked direct

Locèlle is a curated collection of design-led vacation homes. We do not process bookings or add fees. We introduce you to the owner, and you book with them.

Jorge and I started Locèlle in 2025. We host a farmhouse in Kennebunkport, Maine, and we built Locèlle because homes like these, made by owners with a strong point of view, were getting lost on the big platforms. Every home is chosen by hand and presented with its story.

Booking direct means the price you agree is the price you pay. You can ask the owner about the dirt road after rain, the hot tub temperature and the best trail that week. New to this? Read What Is Direct Booking? A Beginner's Guide.
