New Year's Eve in a Cabin: Quiet Catskills and Hudson Valley Stays Near NYC

New Year's Eve falls on a Thursday this year, and New Year's Day is a Friday. For many people that makes it a four-day weekend, from December 31 to Sunday, January 3.

That is long enough to leave the city, and long enough to do the night differently. No crowds, no cover charge, no hunt for a car at 1 a.m. A fire, a good dinner and a quiet countdown in a house you have to yourselves.

These are the Locèlle homes in the Catskills and Hudson Valley we would choose for it. Every one is booked directly with its owner, with no platform fees added at checkout.

For two

A 70s-Inspired Retreat in the Catskills is a chalet in Parksville with vaulted cedar ceilings, original wood paneling and a wood-burning stove. The tiles behind the stove were made by Marcy, an artist who once lived in the house. Peter and Lauren liked them so much they used them for their logo. It sleeps four. From $250 a night, the gentlest price on this list. Read Peter and Lauren's story.

Yamagoya Cabin in Roxbury draws on Japanese ryokan traditions. There is a tatami room, a living space built around the fireplace and a firepit under the stars. It sleeps five. Plattekill and Belleayre are both nearby if you want to ski on New Year's Day. From $450 a night. Read Where the Catskills Meet Japanese Stillness.

For a small group

The Reflecting House in Callicoon is a dark, two-story house in the Sullivan County woods. Its wood-burning stove, set against deep green tile, is the center of the house in winter. The kitchen has midnight-blue cabinets and walnut counters, which suits a long dinner. It has three bedrooms and sleeps six. From $550 a night.

Phillipsport Church House in Wurtsboro is an 1823 church restored by architect Matthew Bremer. Dinner happens under the sanctuary's soaring ceilings, and the fire orb outside is where the countdown belongs. It sleeps six and is one of the shortest drives from the city. From $545 a night.

The Hollow Sky House in Rensselaerville sits on 110 acres with a fireplace and a hot tub. In winter the nearby Huyck Preserve and Rensselaerville State Forest are good for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. It sleeps five. From $444 a night.

With a hot tub near the slopes

Tannersville Forest Retreat is steps from Catskill State Park, with a private hot tub, an open-air shower and a fireplace. Hunter Mountain is minutes away. It sleeps five. From $500 a night. For more homes near the mountains, see Catskills Ski Cabins.

For a bigger table

Hudson House in Newburgh sleeps ten across five bedrooms, with river views and a fire to gather around. From $2,500 a night.

January 1: a first walk of the year

New York State Parks runs First Day Hikes on New Year's Day at parks across the state, often with a guide and something warm at the end. Check the State Parks website in December for this year's list.

If you prefer your own route, the Catskill Scenic Trail near Roxbury is flat and easy in snow. Near Tannersville, Kaaterskill Falls is often icy in winter, so bring traction for your boots and turn back if the path is glazed. Or take the first chairlift of the year at Belleayre or Hunter, weather permitting.

Booking New Year's Eve

  • Ask about minimum stays. Many owners set two or three nights over New Year's. Thursday to Sunday is the natural booking.
  • Book by early December. Holiday weeks fill before ordinary winter weekends.
  • Plan for winter roads. Ask the owner how the driveway is plowed and whether you need all-wheel drive. Aim to arrive before dark.
  • Shop on the way. Small-town stores may close early on December 31 and stay closed on January 1.

About Locèlle, and why these homes are booked direct

Locèlle is a curated collection of design-led vacation homes. We do not process bookings or add fees. We introduce you to the owner, and you book with them.

Jorge and I started Locèlle in 2025. We host a farmhouse in Kennebunkport, Maine, and we built Locèlle because the most considered homes were getting lost on the big platforms. Every home here is chosen by hand and presented with its story.

Booking direct means the price you agree is the price you pay. You can ask the owner about the stove, the hot tub and the road before you commit, and they are free to say yes to a late checkout on January 3. New to this? Read What Is Direct Booking? A Beginner's Guide.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I spend a quiet New Year's Eve near New York City?

The Catskills and Hudson Valley are the closest options for a quiet New Year's in a private house, roughly one and a half to three hours from the city by car depending on the town.

When should I book a New Year's Eve rental?

By early December if you can. Homes with fireplaces and hot tubs go first, and many owners have returning guests who book a year ahead.

Do vacation rentals have minimum stays over New Year's Eve?

Many do, usually two or three nights. With New Year's Eve on a Thursday this year, a Thursday-to-Sunday stay fits most minimums.

Is it safe to drive to the Catskills in winter?

Usually, with planning. Check the forecast, carry a scraper and a charged phone, and ask the owner whether the driveway is plowed and whether you need all-wheel drive. Arrive before dark when you can.

Are there First Day Hikes in the Catskills on New Year's Day?

New York State Parks holds First Day Hikes at parks across the state each January 1. The list of locations is published in December on the State Parks website.
