The Cave: A Home Built Into the Rock

Step inside The Cave at Dunlap Hollow, a 1,500-square-foot home set into a natural recess cave on the property's 40 acres of Hocking Hills sandstone and forest.

Bryant & Amy Gingerich designed and built it themselves, with interiors by Renee Byler. Construction ran through most of 2022, and the build photos are part of the story. A gas stove handles cold nights.

Inside, two king bedrooms (one with two Murphy twins), a deep soaking tub with bath salts, a full kitchen and a pool table. Outside, a large patio, six-person hot tub, outdoor fireplace with lounge chairs and private trails to a valley overlook.

Meet Your Hosts

Bryant & Amy Gingerich

Bryant and Amy found a 40-acre parcel online and took a chance on it, naming it Dunlap Hollow for the road it sits on and the small valley locals call a hollow. They designed and built The A-Frame and The Cave themselves and renovated The Cottage, a 1920s cabin. Today they also share their A-Frame plans and consult with other hosts building their own retreats.
