Mockingbird Villa, Design & Birdsong
Mockingbird Villa is a midcentury hideaway between Palm Springs and Joshua Tree, set on a hillside near Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. Surrounded by cactus gardens, pine trees, and open desert sky, the home is designed to dissolve the boundary between interior and landscape.
About the space
Light defines the architecture. High vaulted ceilings and custom folding glass doors pull daylight deep into the space and open the living room fully onto the patio. The interiors feel open, calm, and intentional—built around flow, stillness, and ease of living.
Outside, two private acres unfold into a curated desert landscape with sweeping mountain views. A circular gravel drive leads into a garden of cacti and succulents, with outdoor spaces designed for slow mornings, long afternoons, and starlit evenings in the hot tub. With over 200 species of migrating birds passing through, nature is constantly in motion around you.
Why Locèlle loves it
A study in restraint—where architecture doesn’t frame the landscape so much as surrender to it. Light is the only constant here, moving through the space like a material of its own.
The villa never asks for attention. It earns it quietly—through proportion, stillness, and the decision to let the desert remain the dominant voice.
