Sol to Soul
A white modern house, ten acres of Mojave Desert, and a massive boulder known as Whale Rock.
Sol to Soul feels less like a house placed in the landscape than one designed around it. Set down a private dirt road in Pioneertown’s Pipes Canyon, the home looks out across Joshua Trees, granite formations, and wide-open desert.
Originally created as a low-impact prefab retreat with Cover, the house uses floor-to-ceiling glass, passive solar orientation, and low-e windows to bring the landscape into the architecture.
Its design has earned attention well beyond the High Desert, with features in Dwell, Condé Nast Traveler, Thrillist, and Green Wedding Shoes. Inside, Christian Liaigre furniture, handmade Moroccan rugs, Karim Rashid dining chairs, and contemporary art give the interiors a collected feel while keeping the desert firmly in view.
The Space
The two-bedroom, two-bath home is organized around glass, stone, and sky. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors open the living spaces onto the decks, making the boundary between inside and outside feel almost incidental.
The interiors pair modern architecture with warm, considered pieces, including Christian Liaigre furniture, teak, Moroccan rugs, and works by artists such as Robert Motherwell and Aaron Fink.
The kitchen is equipped for real cooking, with Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, while both king bedrooms open toward the desert. Outside, a saltwater hot tub and outdoor shower sit beneath a giant boulder, alongside an outdoor living room, fire pit, grill, and teak dining table.
Who It’s For
Design-minded couples. Two king bedrooms and a highly considered interior make it an easy fit for two couples traveling together.
Creative types. The quiet setting, dramatic landscape, and restrained interiors give writers, artists, and photographers plenty of space to think.
Friends who like to gather. The kitchen, dining areas, decks, and fire pit make staying in feel like part of the trip.
Why Locèlle Loves It
- Architecture as a frame. Expansive glazing brings the Joshua Trees, boulders, and desert directly into the house.
- A very good eye. Christian Liaigre, Karim Rashid, Moroccan rugs, and contemporary art give the interiors a distinctly collected character.
- Whale Rock. The enormous formation beside the house gives the crisp architecture a striking geological counterpoint.
- Designed around the land. Cover mapped the site to work around existing Joshua Trees, boulders, and views.
- A kitchen worth using. Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, proper cookware, and indoor and outdoor dining make meals part of the experience.
- Desert after dark. The property’s dark skies make the Milky Way visible from the house.
- A published design house. Sol to Soul has been featured by Dwell, Condé Nast Traveler, Thrillist, and Green Wedding Shoes, bringing its architecture and interiors to a wider audience.
- Book Direct. Locèlle introduces you directly to the hosts, so you can book with them without added platform fees.
Modern architecture, wild desert
A considered interior, a proper kitchen, and ten acres of Mojave landscape make Sol to Soul feel equally suited to staying in and heading out.
