Stop Renting Out Your Algorithm Rank: A Free Direct-Booking Guide for Owners

The Locèlle owner guide, Stop Renting Out Your Algorithm Rank, lying on a sunlit walnut table beside a cup of coffee

Most vacation rental owners pay a booking platform twice. Once in fees, and again by handing over every guest relationship they worked to earn. When a guest checks out, the platform keeps the contact. The next stay starts from zero, even with guests who loved your home.

We wrote a free guide for owners who want to change that. Stop Renting Out Your Algorithm Rank is the direct-booking playbook for design-forward hosts: a short, practical guide to keeping more of your bookings, and more of your guests, without walking away from the platforms overnight.

Why we wrote it

We talk to owners every week. The same three problems come up again and again.

  • The fee you see. Platforms charge on both sides, a cut from you and a service fee on your guest's total. Together they can take 15 to 20 percent of what a guest pays.
  • The relationship you don't own. You can't email a past guest, invite them back or tell them about a quiet week in March.
  • The visibility you don't control. A ranking change, a slow reply or one unfair review can move a listing from the first page to the fifth overnight.

None of this means leaving the platforms. It means building a direct side that grows alongside them, so a bigger share of your year comes to you.

What's inside

  • What the platforms are quietly costing you. The fees, the lost relationships and the ranking risk, with a short exercise to count what it costs you.
  • Build your direct-booking foundation. The three things every owner needs, whatever tools they choose: a way to capture guest contact details, a way to take bookings without a middleman, and a way to get paid securely.
  • Get discovered without an algorithm. How curated collections, your own channels and word of mouth bring in guests who are looking for a home like yours.
  • The listing that sells itself. Photography, story-led copy and what "design-forward" means in practice.
  • Owner case studies. How three owners book direct today.

Three owners who already book direct

The guide follows three homes, each running a different direct model.

  • Neversink Retreat, Parksville, New York. Maggie Dallal books guests through her own site, alongside Airbnb, because she wants to know who's coming and host them properly.
  • Sea Roost, Montauk, New York. Ron Brand and Matt Albiani take nightly guests on Airbnb and arrange longer stays directly, with no platform fee on the biggest bookings of the year.
  • The Old Cape Barn, Kennebunkport, Maine. Our own home. We work with our property manager to offer direct short-term leases for part of the year: fewer turnovers, and no platform fees on those stays.

Each case study ends with one idea you can borrow for your own home.

Where Locèlle fits

Locèlle is one example of a curated collection. We choose homes by hand for their design and story, and no one can pay their way in. Guests book directly with owners, and there are no booking fees on either side. It works alongside the other channels in the guide, not instead of them.
