Hochatown in Winter: Broken Bow's Lights, Beavers Bend and a Cabin Built for Quiet

Sunrise Serenity, a modern cabin among the pines in Hochatown, Oklahoma

Most people know Hochatown in summer, when Broken Bow Lake fills with boats and every cabin in the pines is booked. Winter is a different place. The crowds thin, the lake goes still, and the forest of southeastern Oklahoma turns into exactly what most visitors came for in the first place: quiet.

This guide covers Hochatown and Broken Bow from December through February. It explains what is on in town for the holidays, what is open and what closes, and a design-led cabin in the pines that you book directly with its owners.

Hochatown after the summer crowds

Hochatown sits at the edge of Beavers Bend State Park, just north of Broken Bow, about three and a half hours from Dallas–Fort Worth. In summer the main road through town is busy with families heading for the lake, the river and the attractions along the highway.

From late November the pace drops. Many cabins sit empty midweek, restaurants have room, and the shortleaf pines and hardwoods of the Ouachita foothills are at their clearest once the leaves are down. Days are often mild enough for a long walk. Nights get cold, which is when a hot tub and an outdoor fireplace earn their place.

Some seasonal attractions along the highway close or cut their hours in winter, so check before you drive over for anything specific.

Winter Wonderland and the holidays in Broken Bow

The Broken Bow Area Chamber of Commerce lists its Winter Wonderland at Broken Bow City Park from December 1 to December 27, 2026. The park fills with holiday lights and displays, and in past years some Saturdays have added Santa and local vendors. Check the chamber's calendar for evening hours and special nights.

Other traditions have run through December in recent years, according to Remington Retreats' holiday guide:

  • Christmas at the Cabin at the Forest Heritage Center inside Beavers Bend, a decorated historic cabin with free admission.
  • A Christmas parade and tree lighting in early December, in McCurtain County and Hochatown.
  • Santa's house on Broadway in downtown Broken Bow on December weekend afternoons.

2026 dates for these had not been posted when we published. The Explore Broken Bow events calendar is the place to confirm.

Beavers Bend on a cold, clear day

Beavers Bend State Park is open year-round, and winter is a good time to walk it. The trails along the Mountain Fork River and the lakeshore are quiet, and with the leaves down you can see much farther into the forest than in summer.

The Lower Mountain Fork River below the dam is a year-round trout stream, and winter fishing draws a small, dedicated crowd. Paddling and horseback rides depend on outfitters, so check who is open. The Forest Heritage Center is worth an hour on a rainy afternoon.

Bring layers. A winter day here can start below freezing and be comfortable in a light jacket by lunch.

Inside Sunrise Serenity

Sunrise Serenity cabin and its decks among tall pines in Hochatown, Oklahoma

Sunrise Serenity is a modern cabin among the pines, about seven minutes from Broken Bow Lake. Its owners shaped it around the things that make the setting special: changing light, tall trees and natural materials. Floor-to-ceiling windows pull the forest into the living room, and wraparound decks open straight into the trees.

The main-floor suite has a California king bed, organic linens, a soaking tub and a double walk-in shower. Upstairs, a loft with four full-size bunks gives children or friends their own space. Outside there is a private hot tub, a fire pit, an outdoor fireplace and a grill, which in winter means an evening outside under the pines without getting cold.

It has two bedrooms and three bathrooms and sleeps six, from $362 a night. It suits a family that wants room to spread out, or two couples who want the loft and the suite to feel separate.

Planning a winter weekend

  • Getting there. Hochatown is about three and a half hours from Dallas–Fort Worth, mostly on two-lane roads for the last stretch. Leave before dark if you can.
  • When to go. The first three weekends of December pair well with Winter Wonderland. January and February are the quietest months and often the best value.
  • Weather. Winters are mild by northern standards, but ice storms happen. Ask your host about the driveway and what to do if the roads freeze.
  • Booking. Holiday weeks fill first. Book directly with the owners and ask about minimum stays over Christmas and New Year.
